Who we are

How was the club formed?

The Andros film club was founded in 1995 by year-round inhabitants of Andros who wanted to provide more options for entertainment on the island of Andros during the winter months.

How is the cinema run?

The cinema club is run as a non-profit organisation by a team of volunteer members. Financially, it relies on the yearly subscriptions of its members, revenue from the bar and from ticket sales.

Its volunteer members must carry out all the usual tasks and functions needed to keep a cinema running: designing and distributing the programme, coordinating and ordering the films from distributors, transporting the reels, film editing, operating the projector, on-the-door ticket sales, making bar snacks and cakes for the interval, offering drinks, serving, cleaning the rooms, etc.

When does the cinema operate?

The cinema has been operating continuously for the past 12 years. Its annual season begins in autumn (end-September/beginning-October) and usually finishes in spring (beginning-May). Films are shown at the Cinema/Theatre of Chora every Saturday and Tuesday at around 8.30pm.

What kind of films do you show?

The club aims to show high-quality cinema. It regularly programmes seasons of films by Greek directors, films from festivals such as the Drama Film Festival and also holds educational screenings. In addition, it will happily organise special screenings on behalf of other organisations or clubs. More information about our programme can be found by searching the film archive on our programme page.

How much is a ticket, do I have to be a member to watch a film?

The club is open to everyone and you can see a film either by paying the simple entrance fee (5€), or by becoming a member. For more information see our Tickets & membership page.

Autumn 2005

Lets get off our sofas this winter and meet at the Andros Cinema Club in Chora. 220 films in 9 years... I admire the courage, persistance and patience of the Cinema Club's organisers who are determined to fill empty seats for wonderful films that would otherwise go unseen. The big screen brings beauty to our life, it adds ideas, dreams and imagination to our everyday routine.

Autumn 2007

Throughout the autumn, winter and spring I have to travel for work. Wherever I am, all these different experiences, the responsibility, the concentration and fatigue bring to my mind my peaceful corner on my beloved island of Andros... and particularly the feeling of frienship and euphoric emotion I feel when going to see a film at the Cinema Club. If only I could never miss a single film there... nor a single evening with the people who create such a warm and civilised atmosphere both in the screening room and in the foyer, with its raki and snacks. I hope that its small audience will become great. Happy winter, my friends, I'm always with you, with all my heart.
